Need A Storage Unit? Here Are A Few Questions To Ask To Help You Find The Right Facility

by Susan Beck

Whether it is a house full of clutter you just want out of the way or a few items you have to temporarily get out of the way, a storage unit is usually the best solution. Even though storage facilities are pretty easy to find no matter where you may live, not every storage facility is the right fit for every customer. Before you just pick a facility at random and start hauling your stuff, there are a few questions you should be asking yourself to ensure you do find the best storage facility for your needs.

What types of items are you planning to store?

Are the items you will be storing going to stand up to changes in temperature or humidity, or could they sustain damage. If the items you plan to store could be damaged by temperature and humidity changes, it is best to find a facility that offers climate-controlled units. A few items that could be better kept in a climate-controlled setting include:

  • perishable dry grocery items
  • photos and photo albums
  • painted artwork
  • electronics, such as stereo or computer equipment

How long will you need a storage unit?

This is an important question to ask because different storage facilities have different contracts. While some facilities will rent a unit to you on a short-term, month-by-month basis, some require that you agree to a three or six-month term.

Are the items you are storing expensive?

Think about the value of what you will be storing. While most stored items will have some personal value, if you are planning to store something that is highly valuable in monetary terms, you may want to look for a storage facility that has added security. For example, some of the most secure storage facilities have features like perimeter fencing, gates that require an access code, and even around the clock security guards.

How often will you need to visit the storage unit?

This is a crucial question to ask. If you will be making regular trips to the storage facility to retrieve or store your items, it is best to find a facility that is in close proximity to your home. On the other hand, if you plan to stow the items away and go back for them eventually, but will rarely have to go back in between, it is perfectly fine to go with a storage facility a bit further away.
