Advice From Santa That Makes Moving During The Holidays A Lot Easier

by Susan Beck

Moving is a stressful process regardless of the time of year. However, it's often more stressful to move during the holiday season because you have to find the time to celebrate with your family between all of the packing, organizing, and moving. Fortunately, there are things that you can do to ensure your family gets settled into your new home without missing out on your traditional holiday activities. All you need to do is follow some of Santa's advice.

Make a List and Check it Twice

A three-subject notebook can become a lifesaver to those moving during the holidays. To stay organized, use one section for to-do lists and notes relating to organizing your belongings and packing up your current home, including a list of repairs that need completed, an inventory list, and a list of bills that need paid before you move. Dedicate another section for everything relating to your new house, such as a list of utility companies that you need to call, a list of online accounts that need address changes, and an organization plan for your new house. Finally, keep the last section for anything that's holiday related. This way, you have everything you need to accomplish over the next month together in one place. You can also alter your notebook to organize it even further. Consider printing out a monthly calendar and taping it to the inside front cover of the notebook to track all of the important dates throughout the month. You should also keep individual to-do lists in each notebook section. Also, make sure the notebook that you use has built-in folders on the dividers to keep things such as receipts, bills, and important holiday recipes so they are easy to access.

Put Your Elves to Work

Don't let the entire burden of moving and holiday planning fall on you. Even the littlest elves can help out. Have your children help you organize and pack up their belongings. They can also help you gather items for donation and carry boxes into the correct rooms when you arrive at your new house.

Be Jolly

Whatever you do, don't let the stress of moving put a damper on your family's holiday celebration. Do your best to make the moving process less stressful, at least until the holidays are over. Consider renting a climate-controlled storage unit to hold items that you won't need as soon as you move into your new home. This way, you don't have so much packing and organizing to do as soon as you arrive. You can worry about everything that isn't an absolute necessity after the holidays are over. Also, you might discover that you really don't need some of the items you've put into storage. So, you can donate more of your belongings when cleaning the storage unit out.

You can also pack all of your family's holiday decorations in specific boxes so that they are easy to spot. This way, you can make sure all of your holiday-related stuff gets taken to your new home, not your storage unit. Also, you can unpack these boxes first so that your house is decorated for the season.

Finally, order as many holiday gifts as you can online. Moving takes a lot of time and energy, so you shouldn't assume that you'll have time left in your busy schedule to get your holiday shopping done locally.

While moving during the holiday season might take a little more planning, it doesn't need to be stressful. By staying organized, you can get your move completed and enjoy the holiday festivities. For more moving and storage tips, talk to a facility like North Star Mini Storage.
